Granite care guide

Sealing – your first line of defence

Sealer soaks into the pores to keep out stains, moisture and bacteria while letting the stone breathe. Dense stones like Absolute Black may only need sealing every 2–3 years; more porous granites need it yearly.

• Busy family kitchens: every year
• Moderate use: every 18–24 months
• Light use: every 2–3 years

The water test: put a few drops of water on different areas.

• Beads up straight away → sealing is fine for 6–12 months
• Soaks in within 5–10 minutes → reseal within 3–6 months
• Soaks in in under 5 minutes → reseal now

Daily cleaning

• Morning: clear the surface, wipe with a microfibre cloth and warm water, use a pH-neutral granite cleaner and buff dry.
• Evening: clear food and spills straight away, clean with granite cleaner or mild washing-up liquid, rinse and dry fully to avoid water spots.

Avoid: acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon, citrus), abrasives (scouring powder, wire wool, rough sponges), bleach, ammonia and general bathroom cleaners, and oily products such as furniture polish.

Stain removal

For any spill: blot (don't wipe), clean with granite cleaner, rinse, and dry.

• Oily stains (cooking oil, butter, cosmetics) – apply a thick paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, cover with cling film, tape the edges and leave 24 hours, then rinse.
• Organic stains (coffee, tea, fruit, wine) – apply a hydrogen peroxide poultice (mixed with bicarbonate of soda or flour), cover for 24 hours, then rinse and dry.
• Water spots and mineral deposits – use a granite-safe mineral remover, or buff gently with a bicarbonate paste, then rinse.

Heat protection

Granite handles heat well, but sudden extremes can cause thermal shock and weaken the sealer. Use a trivet or board for pans over 150°C, slow cookers and other appliances, dishes straight from the oven, and kettles and coffee machines.

Preventing scratches

Always use a chopping board, keep knives in a block, put mats under small appliances, lift rather than drag heavy items, and use coasters under glasses and bottles.

Long-term care
